Connecting Activities (CA) is a Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (ESE) initiative designed to promote “college and career readiness” for all students through a robust statewide infrastructure. Funded by a dedicated state budget line item, CA establishes public-private partnerships via the 16 local workforce development boards (WIBs) to connect schools with businesses. These partnerships deliver structured work-based learning and career development experiences that enhance students’ academic and employability skills.
At MassHire Merrimack Valley Workforce Board (MHMVWB), the Connecting Activities Youth Service Specialist collaborates with local employers to create job opportunities for youth aged 14-25. These include part-time, after-school, weekend, and summer positions. The team regularly visits area high schools to provide students with job applications, coaching, and personalized support in their employment search.
Beyond facilitating work experiences, Connecting Activities staff organize and support a variety of career development events such as job fairs, job shadow days, career days, employer guest speaker series, workshops, and more.
